For J1 visa candidates, we recommend starting your search 1.5 years before you graduate. You will want to have your contract negotiated and paperwork for your visa ready to go by the opening day for J1 visa applications in the state you wish to practice. Those start around September 1st the year prior to your graduation.
For non-visa candidates, we recommend starting your search 9-12 months before your expected graduation and find that most candidates will have signed contracts by December the year before they graduate. (see our Timeline Guide for more detail)
